CalTrans Traffic Advisory: Overnight Lane Closure on SR-27 at Topanga Canyon Landslide to Continue Next Week, Sept. 23-27

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will continue overnight closure of northbound lane on State Route 27 (Topanga Canyon Boulevard) next week to secure straw wattles on the bare slope where a massive landslide occurred March 9. Work began on Sept. 3 and is on track to be completed Sept. 27. The southbound lane will remain open with flaggers directing alternating traffic. Signs will be posted. Motorists can expect delays.

Northbound Lane Closure – Sept. 23-27

  • 9 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday
  • 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday
  • 9 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday
  • 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday

The lane will reopen each morning. No closure on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Where: SR-27 at postmile 1.8 and extending about one quarter mile in each direction.

What Work Involves: Anchors were installed early this month at the top of a steep slope where soil, vegetation and boulders came crashing down during heavy rainstorm and covered a section of SR-27 in March. Caltrans reopened the roadway months ahead of schedule on June 2. Crews now are tethering themselves to the anchors to attach and space straw wattles across the face of the hillside as a safety measure to prevent soil runoff during the rainy season.

To Be Scheduled: Hydroseeding the hillside with native seeds in coordination with California State Parks. Vegetation helps keep the soil in place.

Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
