Caltrans Update: TCB Boulder Threat

Stacy SledgeNews

UPDATE: On February 24, Caltrans blew up the boulder threatening Topanga Canyon Blvd. You can watch a recording of the detonation below!

A Caltrans geologist was assessing the slopes along Topanga Canyon Boulevard/State Route 27 and noticed a very large boulder in a precarious position above the roadway between postmile 2.1 and 1.7 that has shifted in position after the rains. That’s south of town and within the current closure. It’s estimated to be roughly 30 feet by 15 feet by 10 feet in dimension and poses a safety threat.

At present, no one is allowed in – including Caltrans Maintenance and contract crews, utility workers or the public – until we can remove it. Additionally, there appears to be a Southern California Edison powerline located below it, so we will coordinate with SCE to turn off power during blasting operations.

In addition, There is a lot of debris that came down (please see this post on X) and Caltrans will need to clear the road and check for any damage once we get the boulder removed.

We will keep you posted on progress. Thank you.
