A Request for Volunteers of All Kinds For the Canyon Sages Senior Group
Are you looking for an opportunity to become a community activist, lending a helping hand to neighbors while meeting new friends and renewing old friendships?
Come to the Canyon Sages Volunteer Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., in the Sages Room behind the Topanga Community Center at 1440 N. Topanga Cyn Blvd.
No expertise is required—just a desire to help.
The Canyon Sages is the only organization in Topanga dedicated to seniors. Come to join (there are no dues) and to volunteer at any age. We have needs to fit any skill and passion.
Could you teach a low-cost paid class, run a free club, or host an informational program?
Instructors are needed to teach languages, art, exercise, Tai Chi, journal writing, cooking classes or run clubs like a knitting circle, to name a few areas. Bring your own ideas for a class, club, or presentation.
Are you good with computers and like to work from home? We’re looking for outreach and communication specialists to write articles and send e-blasts to our Sages members about our classes, clubs, and programs; update our at-risk list for seniors who might need assistance during an emergency; prepare our monthly calendars and update the Sages website and membership rolls.
Are you interested in more hands-on jobs? A team of volunteers are needed in the kitchen to help prepare the Senior Dinner on the first Friday of each month from October through June. Join the fun in the kitchen. Volunteers of all ages—teens can work for community service hours—are invited to set up and decorate tables and gather in the kitchen to help our expert chefs Joe Grassi and Karen Dannenbaum prepare and serve healthy and delicious meals.
We also have an active arm, providing direct services to seniors, that always needs volunteers.
Drivers are needed to take seniors to doctor’s appointments, food pantries, and help with marketing and errands. Drivers may volunteer or charge a reasonable fee. We are creating a volunteer and low-cost handyman services list. If you can make a simple repair or install a ramp or other safety measures for injured or disabled Topangans, please come sign up and change a senior’s life.
We once had a thriving Meals on Wheels program. Organizers and drivers are needed to revive the food program and deliver meals to seniors and disabled residents.
The Sages also assist at-risk seniors one-on-one with health issues, disabilities and injuries. The Sages Services Committee needs help in identifying and meeting the needs of vulnerable members of our community.
We also need fundraisers. Volunteers are needed for grant-writing and to organize the annual bake sale and shredding event fundraiser.
Finally, but most importantly, we are looking for leaders. Wise Sages are needed to fill the role of President/Meeting Facilitator, Treasurer, and Recording Secretary. All Sages are welcome to join the leadership team to set priorities and implement programs to better serve the needs of our seniors.
Come to our meeting on September 10, but if you can’t, sign up as a member and/or volunteer at CanyonSages.com. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll get our e-blasts, including our monthly calendar of events, classes, clubs and programs. Our classes are Sages sponsored, but open to all ages, so that our teachers can reach more people and keep their fees low.
We hope to see you Tuesday, September 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the Sages Room of the Community House!
