How the 2021 LA County Redistricting Can Have Serious Consequences for Topanga

Los Angeles County is broken up into 5 supervisorial districts served by 5 LA County Supervisors. (Topanga is in the 3rd District.) These districts are meant to be "reasonably equal" to each other, and contain the county’s 88 cities and more than 100 unincorporated areas. An independent county commission is currently studying possible changes to the boundaries of those supervisorial districts.

As the County’s population grows, the supervisorial boundaries must be adjusted to account for shifts in population and demographics to ensure that voters in each district have an equal voice in electing their representatives. The elected representatives are responsible for public policy and funding decisions that impact the lives of County residents, such as law enforcement, hospitals, public works, children and family services and public social services to name a few.

At the October 28, 2021 Special Meeting, the county's Citizen Redistricting Commission chose four map draft options to receive further public input and discussion.

Our LA County Supervisorial District 3 could be threatened if we do not preserve a geographically cohesive map uniting our common interests. In 2011, it was suggested to remove or split our 3rd District’s current representation---to split Topanga's interest. It puts at risk losing or changing current policies that benefit Topanga and our surrounding communities of interest (Santa Monica Mtns, Coastal Watersheds, LA Westside, San Fernando Valley and Las Virgenes Region). At that time, enough residents spoke up to preserve Topanga's boundaries.

It's now time to protect Topanga again. You can have a voice in this important matter to make sure Topanga has the best representation. The next opportunity to voice your opinion on how Topanga should align itself is at a virtual public hearing on Sunday, November 7, at 1:00 p.m.
