IT'S A GIRL!
This week National Park Service researchers, together with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, identified a four-week-old mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains. The kitten, dubbed P-54, is an excellent indication that, despite all the stress we've put on their habitat, mountain lions are continuing to reproduce. It is likely, however, given the hemmed-in nature of their space, that this new addition is the product of inbreeding, which, as we know, is genetically weaker over time.
That's why I am so strongly supporting the proposed wildlife crossing over the 101 in Agoura Hills in order to provide a connection between this genetically isolated population in the Santa Monica Mountains and other robust populations to the north.
